What is a monogram?

A monogram is a picture consisting of one or more letters. The word monogram signifies the use of one initial letter to represent an entire name. The picture can be built by one, two, three or four letters.

Monogram for one person

One letter - When a single letter is used, it is usually the first letter of the persons first name or last name. For example, Mary Elisabeth Bryant's single-letter monogram could be:
M or B

Two letters - Two letters can symbolize one persons first and last name. In Mary Elisabeth Bryant's case:
MB

Three letters - The first letter of one persons first, middle, and last names. Mary Elisabeth Bryant's monogram could be done in two ways:
MBE or MEB

The first letter of the persons last name is larger and placed in the center with the first initial and the middle initial on each side. With all three letters the same size, the letters appear in the order the name is normally written.

Monogram for couples

One letter - A single letter can symbolize the first letter of a couples or families last name. Mary and Thomas Bryant's monogram could be:
B

Two letters - Two letters can symbolize two persons first names. Mary and Thomas Bryant's monogram could be:
MT

Three letters - Three letters can stand for or a couples first and last names. For weddings, usually the order is like this:
  1. First initial is woman's first name initial
  2. Middle initial is initial of couples last name
  3. Last initial is man's first name initial
So in above example, if couples names were Mary & Thomas Bryant, you would list the monogram as: MBT
